These fees apply to pre-purchase surveys. Length categories use the manufacturer’s stated model length rather than fractional measured length. Additional mechanical survey services and oil analysis are priced separately below. Haulout, yard charges, and separately engaged specialists are excluded.
Propulsion Machinery: Included Examination
The pre-purchase survey includes a visual examination of accessible propulsion machinery and basic operational observations. Machinery identification, installation, cooling and exhaust arrangements, and visible concerns such as leakage, corrosion, or deterioration are documented in the report.
For outboard-powered vessels, the examination includes accessible powerhead components, lower units, propellers and shaft components, engine mounting, and trim equipment. Compression testing and computer diagnostics are services provided by a separately engaged engine specialist.
Full Mechanical Survey — Inboard Engines & Transmissions
Available for gasoline and diesel inboards when the buyer has not engaged a separate engine specialist.
A mechanical survey includes a visual inspection and functional evaluation of the vessel’s engines, transmissions, cooling and exhaust systems, fuel delivery components, engine controls, mounts, and accessible associated machinery. Engines are operated to normal temperature, with operating parameters, fluid condition, leaks, abnormal noise or vibration, and overall performance evaluated. Where a sea trial is conducted, engine RPM, temperatures, pressures, loading, and propulsion performance are assessed under operating conditions.
| Service | Additional fee |
|---|---|
| Single engine and transmission | $150 |
| Twin engines and transmissions | $300 |
| Generator examination | Included |
When a Separate Engine Specialist Is Engaged
Pilothouse Marine Services continues to document machinery identification, system arrangements, and significant visible conditions as part of the vessel survey. Detailed engine evaluation, recording and interpretation of operating parameters, performance assessment, and oil sampling are left to the separately engaged specialist.
The additional $150 or $300 mechanical-survey fee does not apply when a separate specialist performs that evaluation. The specialist’s scope and fees are established directly with the buyer.
Oil Analysis
$85 per sample when provided by Pilothouse Marine Services.
Includes sample collection, delivery to the laboratory, receipt of the analysis, and provision of the laboratory report and any required summary to the client.
What You Receive
The examination
The pre-purchase survey examines accessible hull, structural components, and onboard systems within the agreed scope. It normally includes a haulout examination of the underwater hull and running gear, together with an underway trial and operational observations. Findings identify conditions requiring attention or further investigation. The full mechanical survey is available as an additional service, as described in the mechanical survey section.
The report
The client receives a survey report covering:
- Vessel particulars and equipment descriptions.
- Documented condition and findings, supported by photographs.
- Recommendations for corrective action or further examination.
- An opinion of fair market value and estimated replacement cost.
- Scope, access restrictions, and testing limitations.
